Example of a resource in collapsing wet environments?

Many precious metals and gems are locked in collapsing wet environments however resources such as mineral sands, iron ore and oil sands also exist in such environments.

In Canada there are substantial oil reserves in the oil sands of Athabasca. These are currently being accessed using massive bucket wheel excavators and face shovels in open pits. The resource however slopes gently downward, creating considerable overburden ratio and softening problems as the resource goes deeper. It is estimated that 70-80% of the current known oil sand reserves may not be accessible using traditional mining technology.
